The IPL 2024 season culminated in a thrilling final clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. The match, which saw KKR emerge victorious by 8 wickets, showcased a dominant performance from the Kolkata franchise, clinching their third IPL title.
Starc’s Early Strikes Set the Tone
Mitchell Starc’s lethal opening spell set the tone for KKR’s disciplined bowling performance. He struck early in the innings, removing Abhishek Sharma with a peach of a delivery that swung away and kissed the edge on its way to the wicketkeeper. Starc’s early breakthroughs were crucial in restricting SRH to a modest total.
Top Order Collapse
SRH struggled right from the start as their top order failed to withstand KKR’s bowling attack. Vaibhav Arora capitalized on the conditions, dismissing SRH captain Tripathi in the second over. The early wickets put immense pressure on SRH, and they never quite recovered from the blows dealt in the powerplay overs.
Spinners Maintain Control
Narine, who was later named Player of the Series, bowled a miserly spell, conceding just 16 runs in his quota of four overs. His ability to choke the run flow and pick crucial wickets at pivotal moments was instrumental in KKR’s dominance throughout the tournament and particularly in the final.
Narine’s All-round Contribution
Apart from his bowling exploits, Sunil Narine showcased his batting prowess throughout the season. His quick-fire innings often provided KKR with blistering starts and shifted momentum in their favor. In the final, Narine’s contribution with both bat and ball exemplified his importance to the team’s success.
Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer’s Blitz
Chasing a modest target of 114, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer, the KKR’s openers, started aggressively. Venkatesh Iyer, in particular, continued his phenomenal form in the playoffs with a blazing 40 off just 13 balls. His clean striking and ability to find boundaries at will demoralized the SRH bowling attack early on.
KKR’s Clinical Chase
KKR’s chase was a clinical display of power-hitting and smart batting. Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer ensured that KKR raced to their target in just 10.3 overs, with Venkatesh Iyer finishing the match with an unbeaten 50. Their partnership not only sealed the victory but also underscored KKR’s dominance in the final.
A Third IPL Title for Kolkata Knight Riders
With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders secured their third IPL title, adding to their previous triumphs in 2012 and 2014. The team’s balanced combination of experienced players and exciting young talent, under the astute leadership of Venkatesh Iyer, proved to be the winning formula throughout the season.
